How to use Movavi Video Editor

The new version of Movavi Video Editor 2023 is here, and if you want to learn how to use it you’ve come to the right place. I’ll show you how to start using the program and its different functions and tricks, and I’ll also guide you through the steps you need to follow to continue your learning.

Movavi Video Editor 2023 excels at something its competitors don’t: ease of use. Why does editing a video in the middle of the year 2023 have to be so complicated? Movavi changed that, offering a video editor that anyone can use without being a computer expert.

Do you want to see what you can do with this program? Today I’ll show you how to use Movavi Video Editor 2023.

Movavi Video Editor Interface

To learn how to use the program I will first show you its user interface, and the location of the different buttons and resources you can use. The interface is quite intuitive, so you shouldn’t get lost during the creation process, but better to cover all bases!

When you run the program, the first thing you’ll see is the default interface of Movavi Video Editor. It consists of 3 main panels: Navigation, Timeline, and Preview.

Movavi Video Editor 2023

This panel is located at the top left of the program. From here you can import the different files that you are going to use in the edition or creation of your video. You can add photos, songs, or video tracks in different formats, or view the different resources Movavi offers you.

All the resources you can see from the navigation pane are the following:

  • Import
  • Filters
  • Transitions
  • Titles
  • Stickers
  • More

Every time you click on one of these buttons, different options are displayed in the window of this panel and it allows you to explore its contents. For example, clicking on “Filters” will show you all the available filter options you can add to your video.

Timeline

This is where all the magic happens. The timeline panel is where you spend most of your time in Movavi Video Editor. Here you can edit all the video clips, audio clips, or photos that will be in your final video, as well as add the transitions, filters, stickers, and subtitles. It consists of 3 parts, one on top of the other:

  • Title Track: Here you can add and edit the title and subtitle tracks that you want in your video.
  • Video Track: In this section of the timeline are all the videos you add to the composition. It’s right under the Title Track.
  • Audio Track: The place for the audio tracks. Every time you add an audio track, song, or sound you will find it at the bottom of the timeline

The timeline is where you do the whole process of editing and cutting your videos, simply and intuitively. The vertical orange bar is the marker, which indicates your time position on the video, that is, the current frame you are standing on.

At the bottom left, you will find a slider that serves as a “zoom” on the timeline, in case the length of your audio or video tracks exceeds the size of the screen.

Important: The “zoom” is only to work better on the timeline, it does not affect the final result of the video.

Preview

This panel is a media player. Here you can play the audio and video tracks available in Movavi Video Editor before you import them into the Timeline to start editing. You can also preview the final result of your video.

Any changes you make to the timeline can be played back immediately in the preview panel. You can advance at normal speed, pause, or view frame by frame in case you need more detailed editing.

How to edit a video in Movavi Video Editor 2023

Now that you know your way around the program, it’s time to learn how to do video editing.

Importing files into Movavi Video Editor

To start editing it is necessary to import the files that you will use to compose the final video. You have 2 options to do that:

  1. Go to the Navigation Panel (top left) and press Import > File Import > Add Files. The files will appear in the “Media bin” section.
  2. Drag the files. Open the folder in which you have saved your files, click and drag them directly to the Navigation Panel.

Importing files into the Timeline

To start editing it is not enough to import the files into the program, you have to place them on the Timeline. You can do that by dragging the already imported files from the “Media Bin” tab of the Navigation panel to the Timeline.

You can drag all the video, audio, or photo files you want, and organize them along the Timeline. Remember that the audio will always be underneath the video by default.

Applying Filters

To apply a filter to any video track in the Timeline, go to the Filters button in the Navigation Panel. Clicking on it will display the entire library of available filters. Just choose the filter you want and drag it to the video track of your Timeline. It’s that easy.

If you applied a filter, but you didn’t like the final result it gives to your composition, you can press the key combination Ctrl + Z to undo what you just did. That way you can try any filter without fear of damaging your video.

Movavi offers an extensive library of filters, but you can expand it even further from its website or by clicking on the “Download More!” option.

Splitting or dividing a video

If you have a video file that you want to split in two, you just have to:

  1. Select in the timeline the video clip you want to cut.
  2. Position the orange marker at the time spot where you want to cut the video.
  3. Above the timeline there is a “Divide” icon, you will see it in the shape of scissors. Click here.
  4. That’s it. This cuts the current video clip and turns it into 2 clips.

This function can be used to cut any type of audio or video file, either to remove it or move it around, to add another video in the middle, or to apply some kind of transition.

Adding transitions

Adding a transition is as easy as applying a filter, but it has a couple of extras that make it different.

Go to the Navigation Pane, select “Transitions” to display the library, and then choose the transition you like best. Once you decide which one you want to use, you can drag and drop it on the Timeline between the 2 clips you want.

You cannot apply a transition to just one video clip. If you only have 1 clip but want a transition between 2 different moments of the clip, you can cut the video in 2 and apply the transition there.

A small rectangle will appear between the two clips, indicating that a transition exists there. You can double-click on that rectangle to edit the duration and customize a couple of different settings.

Exporting the final video

Once you have finished editing your video and are ready to show it to the world, it is time to export it. This brings all the clips, transitions, and effects together into one video in the format of your choice.

To do this, press the Export button at the top right of your timeline. This will open a window with different options to export your video. On the left, you have several buttons to export different file types, among which are video, audio-only, or device format.

If you select the video button, you can choose the type of format you want. Movavi offers you the possibility to export in most of the formats currently used, from MP4 to MKV or GIF.

Once the format is selected, you have the option to choose the name of the video, the location where you want to save it, and the quality.

Finally, the default resolution is 1920×1080, but you can change it to your preferred resolution by pressing the Advanced button. There you can change the resolution and some other options, such as the video codec, the audio channel, or the FPS.

Movavi Video Editor Plus allows you to export in a huge amount of resolutions, from 640×480 to 4096×2160, also known as 4K.

Once you have everything set and customized, press Accept and then Start. This will render and export the video with the desired options, to the chosen location.

And that’s it! With this, your video is finished and ready to upload to Youtube, send it to your smartphone, or do whatever you want with it.
